Brief Discussion About Deg

Deg is a big cauldron which was made of an alloy of seven metals, one of which was brought from Colombo, Sri Lanka. The rim of the degh was made in such a way that it never gets hot even while the bottom of the deg is ignited and the food is being cooked. It is present at nowhere except Ajmer sharif dargah. Has been installed from medieval times. Fullfil the purpose of cooking "saffroned sweet rice".

Badi Deg / Shahi Deg :-

In 1568, Emperor Akbar presented this deg (cauldron) to the dargah sharif since he made a wish to present it after fulfilling his mannat and showed gratitude towards Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Hassan Chishty(r.a.). The diameter of the deg is 37 feet wide and 4800kg sweet rice is being cooked in this deg This deg is the biggest deg in the world.

Small Deg / Choti Deg :-

Emperor Jahangir presented this deg as a part of family tradition. The diameter of this deg is 22 feet and 2400kg sweet rice is being cooked in this deg. After niyaz,the saffroned sweet rice is distributed this among thousands of people,the devotees from every religion,caste or gender visit here and consume this niyaz langar. They also take it away with them as a consecrate(tabarruk). The main motive is to feed the poor the prepared tabarrruk is packed to give out to different villages,usually in shares to each member of the family.
